The
Big Red Truck is Here.
If sometime in the
near future you happen to look up into your rearview mirror and see the
crosshairs of a flame red grille and a raised cab roof bearing down on
you, you'd better get out of the way because chances are it's the Big Red
Truck from Dodge and it's pulling some serious trailer behind it. The Big
Red Truck, a concept-type vehicle fashioned from a Dodge Ram 3500 Quad
Cab™ 4x4, is designed to be a towing dream with a brand-new deep breathing
5.9-liter, 24-valve, electronically controlled, fuel-injected, intercooled
turbo diesel engine under the hood and maximum trailer capacity of over
11,000 pounds.
Truck
enthusiasts will breathe a little deeper when they get a look at the Big
Red Truck. The unmistakable Dodge front fascia incorporates energy absorbers,
tow hooks, high-power fog lamps and an air dam. An 18-inch raised aero
roof gives it the appearance of a big line-hauler. A forward-edge light
bar is incorporated into the roof and runs the length of the windshield's
top edge. Side engine exhausts run under the integrated, self-cleaning
steps and cold-air intakes are molded into the modified hood.
Billed
as the ultimate towing vehicle, the Big Red Truck features integrated trailer
tow mirrors, a fifth wheel hitch and 16-inch oversize tires tucked under
flared front fenders and rear dually fenders.
Long road trips are a breeze
with maximum interior room and comfort. The raised roof offers increased
head room and storage. A few of the many features include a swing-down,
six-inch flat screen TV, VCR with remote, CB radio, rear audio with headphones
and, of course, four hot/cold cup holders.
The new Turbo Diesel engine,
built specifically for Dodge by Cummins, is the second generation of the
legendary B-series Cummins engines and features a new electronic fuel system
and electronic integration which offers increased horsepower and torque
over a broader power range — 235 hp at only 2,700 rpm and an awesome 460
lb-ft of torque at a mere 1,400 rpm. In addition, the new 24-valve, intercooled
Turbo Diesel with cylinder-centered fuel-injection offers increased fuel
economy.
The new 24-valve Cummins
Turbo Diesel is available right now for all 1998 Ram Pickups. As for the
Big Red Truck, you'll have to wait awhile. After all, like the Viper once
was, it is a concept vehicle.
